Take a look at the story above, and remember that Jesus came for the poor and the oppressed (the latter of which these employees are, and the former of which they are soon to be if things don't change).
The proposed 55% wage cut, pension cut, and lockout, are unacceptable no matter your political conviction. If Caterpillar successfully cuts wages here then a precedent will be set for the treatment of unions by large companies elsewhere.
The chants were loud yesterday, and a lot of people came out to show solidarity with the workers. I hope that it's not idealistic to think that if enough pressure is put on the company (or the government for that matter) then things will change and the several hundred workers can return to work for fair wages.
A company that is thriving during this so-named economic crisis should not be able to do this sort of violence to their employees, and their families, and the community of London.
I hope people become angry about this, and I hope this because I think that not all anger is violent - maybe intense - but not necessarily violent (depending on the action taken afterwards). An event like this deserves attention because it is not only about those 450 workers and their families but also about any of us with friends and family working in both the public and private sectors.
